Entering 2026，Anti-Money Laundering (AML) in Hong Kong’s banking industry、Know your customer (KYC)、Sanctions Screening、Transaction monitoring continues to be strengthened。For the MSO industry，Banks generally still classify it as a "highly sensitive industry"，But this does not mean that "it is impossible to open an account"，but means：Whose compliance foundation is more solid?，Who can gain the bank’s trust more easily?。

one、Clarify the reality first：Three major changes in the MSO account opening environment in 2026

1) Banks’ “risk preference stratification” is more obvious

In the past, companies often asked "Which bank can open it?"，Now it’s time to ask “Which type of bank is my business profile suitable for?”。The main trends in 2026 are：

Large traditional banks：High threshold、Deep review、long cycle，But account stability is usually better；
Small and medium-sized traditional banks：More flexible for new customers，But we still value business explainability and transparency of capital paths.；
Digital Bank/Virtual Bank：The account opening process is highly digitalized、Fast response，However, MSO businesses will still be carefully screened.，And the transaction limit and functions may be opened in stages。

2) "Licensed" does not mean "low risk"

Many companies mistakenly believe that after obtaining a Hong Kong MSO license,，The bank will automatically release。In fact, what banks focus on is：License + Business Model + Customer Group Structure + Funding Source + Internal Controlthe overall credibility of。That is to say，License is the ticket，Not a pass。

3) KYC has been upgraded from “document verification” to “operation verifiable”

Banks no longer look at just one set of company documents，It’s about verifying that you “really do what you say you do.”。For example：

Whether the official website and external disclosure can correspond to real service scenarios；
Is the country of origin of the customer consistent with what was stated in the application?；
counterparty、Transaction frequency、Is the average price per customer self-consistent?；
Is there a complete AML policy?、Executable processes and trace records。

two、Traditional banks vs digital banks：Selection framework for MSO licensees

(A) Traditional Bank：Stability first，Suitable for long-term operating MSOs

Typical characteristics：Deeply tuned、Long review cycle、Frequent interviews and replacement documents，But if it passes，Subsequent cross-border payment、Corporate financing packages、Account reputation is more advantageous。

Suitable for this type of MSO：

Has been operating for more than 1 year，Have clear financial records；
The customer structure is relatively stable，Key markets are not areas with high sanctions or high money laundering risks；
Have a mature compliance officer/MLRO system and internal audit process；
There will be large transactions in the future、international settlement、Group development needs。

Common challenges：

The account opening period is long (usually 4-12 weeks)，Complex cases take longer)；
Detailed requirements for “Proof of Fund Source” and “Description of Transaction Purpose”；
In-depth background checks on directors and UBOs (ultimate beneficiaries)。

(B) Digital Bank：Efficiency first，Suitable for start-ups or asset-light MSOs

Typical characteristics：High degree of online、Standardize submission of information、Fast response。Some digital banks will open basic functions first，Then gradually increase the quota and authority based on transaction performance。

Suitable for this type of MSO：

Start-up stage，Trading volume is still on the rise；
Business scenarios use local payment、Mainly small and medium-sized cross-border transfers；
Good internal digital capabilities，Ability to quickly connect parts and systems。

Common challenges：

Transactions in certain high-risk countries may be restricted；
Sensitive to risk control triggered by abnormal transactions，Need quick response explanation；
Advanced features, such as complex trade settlements, may not be as complete as traditional banks。

in conclusion：It’s not “which one is the best”，It’s about “which category best matches”

The account opening strategy in 2026 is recommended to adopt "Dual-track system”：Use a main account with high stability as the core settlement，Configure 1-2 digital banks at the same time as operational backup and efficiency supplement，Reduce dependence on a single channel。

2) Prepare a “layered version” of the business description

It is recommended to prepare three sets of explanatory materials：Short version (Executive communication)、Standard version (account manager due diligence)、In-depth version (reviewed by the compliance department)。Avoid one-time heaping of data but lack of structure。

3) Build a traceable transaction sample library
